Project Overview:Despite continuous progress in the exploration of planets and ground robots, unmanned rover still faces the challenges of navigation in harsh environments and steep terrain. Researchers at the University of Toronto’s Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics have developed a tether climbing robot that combines a shell with a freely rotating tether arm. The tether-assisted robot, known as the Tether Robot Explorer (Trex), can traverse and map steep terrain in three dimensions, and is designed for cliff exploration, dam safety inspection, and disaster response.
